Alfonsina Storni was born in Switzerland in 1892. Her family emigrated to Argentina in when she was four. She left home as a teen to be a touring actor, when she began writing plays and short stories. She was a single mother, and lived an unconventional life. Author of five books of poetry, and well known in South America in her time. She was also a journalist and grade school teacher and administrator. After unsuccessfully battling breast cancer she died by suicide, by walking into the sea.
