Russell Evans is a Welsh artist and writer. He makes poetry comics which blend iconography and text in visual poetry. As an author he has written two books on filmmaking and was a freelance magazine writer for fifteen years. He has a PhD in visual poetry and currently teaches poetry and creative writing at University of Plymouth in the UK. Evans is also a member of ArtSpeak poetry group in New York and has had several poetry comics published in journals in the US.
Evans’ visual poetry uses images and words within the common vocabulary of comics such as speech bubbles and emanata. Competing signs of images and words undermine each other to create disharmony and explore themes and ideas. Artificial intelligence, violence, addiction and community trauma are the main impulses behind recent work.
